Big Words

Big Words is a site-responsive participatory sculpture project that explores the material and emotional agency of language. Developed in collaboration with students at Cairnlea Park Primary School, the project investigates how words, when translated into physical form, can shape our experience of place, influence wellbeing and invite new ways of relating to one another.

Beginning with conversations around kindness, courage, belonging, curiosity and hope, students reflected on the words that held meaning within their own lives and school community. Through a series of collaborative workshops, these ideas were transformed into sculptural installations using a range of mixed-media techniques and embedded throughout the school grounds.

Installed in everyday spaces, the works activate the campus as a landscape of language, where words become encounters rather than simply messages. Emerging unexpectedly along pathways, gathering places and gardens, the sculptures encourage moments of pause, reflection and connection, inviting students, teachers and visitors to experience language as something spatial, embodied and shared.

Big Words extends my ongoing interest in the capacity of socially engaged sculpture to transform public spaces through collective making. By treating words as both material and metaphor, the project reimagines language as a form of public infrastructure—one that nurtures agency, belonging and everyday wellbeing within the diverse cultural community of Cairnlea Park Primary School.
